Volunteer Firefighter Combat volunteer firefighters are those that participate in all aspects of firefighting, to include structure fire fighting, motor vehicle accidents, and emergency medical response. Combat firefighters fall into two categories; From-Home Responders and Sleepers. |
A from-home responder resides within a ten-minute response time of any ECF&R fire station. They are depended upon to respond to emergencies from home – or when otherwise available – when dispatched. |
Sleeper volunteers may live outside ECF&R immediate area. They are expected to schedule their volunteer time and respond to emergencies while on duty at one of our stations. Scheduled volunteer time is typically done in shifts – most often night shifts – hence the name ‘sleeper’. Sleepers are required to work a minimum of 1 shift per week. |

Persons interested in volunteer membership with the Fire District may submit an application at any time throughout the calendar year. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. The Fire District typically tests applicants for volunteer positions once per year, as needed. All successful applicants will be required to attend an annual Recruit Academy which is normally held in January and February. For information about volunteer membership contact Chief Mike Carnes at (360)834-4908 or by e-mail at mcarnes@eastcofire-rescue.org. |

Emergency Support Team (EST) The EST provides support on large events such as structure fires, and emergencies that require a long on-scene time. EST members support firefighters with rehabilitative services such as food and water. They also monitor the firefighters’ health and wellness on scene. At times, they fill other support roles such as traffic control and shuttling personnel and equipment. Contact Assistant Chief Jacobs by email at rjacobs@eastcofire-rescue.org for more information regarding the Emergency Response Team. |

Supporting Fire and EMS Services through Community Involvement Community members can make a difference for their local fire and EMS department. Fire Corps helps departments build more capacity by connecting them to community volunteers who can assist in a variety of non-emergency roles. Explore the Fire Corps website to learn more. |
