Combat Firefighter

Combat volunteer firefighters are those that participate in all aspects of firefighting, to include structure fire fighting, motor vehicle accidents, and emergency medical response.  Combat firefighters fall into two categories; From-Home Responders and Sleepers.

Emergency Medical Response Only (EMSO)

EMSO’s can also be From-Home Responders or Sleepers. They are distinguished from a combat firefighter in that they respond to emergency medical calls only. The physical requirements and required training for EMSO are not as stringent as a combat firefighter. However, the activity requirements are the same.

Supporting Fire and EMS Services through Community Involvement

Community members can make a difference for their local fire and EMS department.  Fire Corps helps departments build more capacity by connecting them to community volunteers who can assist in a variety of non-emergency roles. Explore our site to to learn more about Fire Corps.................

Persons interested in volunteer membership with the Fire District may submit an application at any time throughout the calendar year.   Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.  The Fire District will test applicants for volunteer positions twice each year.  The testing date will generally fall in the months of May and November.   All successful applicants will be required to attend an annual Recruit Academy which is normally held in January and February.     For information about volunteer membership contact Captain Wes Long at (360)834-4908 or by e-mail at wlong@eastcofire-rescue.org.

From-Home Responders

A from-home volunteer firefighter resides within a ten-minute response time of any ECF&R fire station. They are depended upon to respond to emergencies from home – or when otherwise available – when dispatched.

Sleepers

Sleeper volunteers may live outside ECF&R immediate area.  They are expected to schedule their volunteer time and respond to emergencies while on duty at one of our stations.  Scheduled volunteer time is typically done in shifts – most often night shifts – hence the name ‘sleeper’.

Emergency Response Team (ERT)

The ERT provides support on large events such as structure fires, and emergencies that require a long on-scene time. ERT members support firefighters with rehabilitative services such as food and water. The also monitor the firefighters’ health and wellness on scene. They also, fill other support roles such as traffic control and shuttling personnel and equipment.  Contact Assistant Chief Jacobs by email at rjacobs@eastcofire-rescue.org for more information regarding the Emergency Response Team.

Cadets

High School students interested in Emergency Services should contact Captain Mike Carnes at 834-4908 or by email at mcarnes@eastcofire-rescue.org, or their school counselor for information regarding the Cadet program currently being offered .
